The heroine swims through idyllic, cerulean waters. Myriad hues of blue dance upon the surface, forming varied, swirling patterns across this colorful art nude photograph. The flow of the water is slightly disturbed by her body’s movement, indicated by tiny ripples and bright highlights on the surface. Most of her form is obscured by the water, but the basic shapes created by the outlines of her form can be discerned.

She is pursuing and transitioning, symbolized by the upward diagonal movement of her body and tight cropping. A diagonal swath of lighter water is aligned with her body, the corners being darker. Her head is held high, a sliver of her profile visible, lit in golden sunlight that creates a halo in her brown tresses. She is both serene and determined.

Water is the perfect metaphor for transitioning because it is so easily changed. The slightest touch from the body created ripples. These transitions are temporary.

Liquid nudes theme

I love working with water and other liquids. The ungovernable nature of liquid provides a balance between order and chaos... A constantly moving mirror and lens, the liquid provides intricate visual surprises. Ripples, reflections, splashes and drops all participate in a mix of light and shadow to create intricate textures.

False color technique

Using the technique of false color, I produce a restrained color palette. The method is inspired by my training in oil painting, and pays homage to the classic technique of hand-colored photography. Color is applied selectively to give a greater illusion of depth as well as evoke an emotional response.

About limited edition archival photographs

This limited edition archival photograph is made with the best quality inks on heavyweight museum-grade paper for 100+ years of color permanence. Each photograph is signed and hand numbered by the artist. A collector can identify which impression they own (for example number one of ten). Once an edition is complete, no more editions of that image will be created. A certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist, is included.

About the artist

A K Nicholas is a visual artist specializing in figure (fine art nudes) photography. An unapologetic celebration of the female form, these images invite the viewer to explore a dreamlike world. Photography is simply a starting point on this journey to an unknown destination. His unorthodox aesthetic blends sensual imagery with a painterly style of manipulated colors.
