This diptych belongs to a series that exposes the experiences of the obligatory Cuban military service, always loaded with a lot of irony, where we thought that a terrible experience happened it is counted in such a way that seems to be the most wanted by all. “Demented crazies with mice in the head in a Military Unit” are as if the characters of the title of my thesis carried out in the Academy had entered to the military, reflective my entrance in a completely different world due my social conditions. An absurd militarism based on any foundation that degrades even more the self-esteem of those who are forced to go by this bitter moment; a militarism that seeks to infiltrate in each sector of the society questioning hard the future. These paintings promote a thinking more daring that each person should practice when somebody imposed us certain conditions, unaware to our will. A thought based on what we really want, without stopping to think what stops us.
This is a particular case based on the game between colonial history of Cuba and the present time. This bird on left, with his imposing slenderness, shows the suit of General Captain of the Island used by Spanish authorities, in the XIX century mainly. This was the maximum authority. It was a stage characterized by the complete submission to the Spanish Crown and the independence fights begun by Cubans. To the other side, in the smallest square, a small amphibian is resting with his inflated stomach having satiate the hunger. The gear that possesses is a recreation of the cap, the belt and the boots that the soldiers should use; in this case, they are of a color very different to the green olive standard. A hoe it is thrown in the floor, sign that he has worked; perhaps this anuran is the responsible for the mushrooms and the strange plants around there. This instrument tells us he has not gotten lost the interest to work still when he is the authority, when there are people that can make these tasks; it is an allegory of the noble work.
The title of this work: "- Partner time, General Captain of the Island, permission to make necessity of first order. - You do not have to request so much permission just do it", it is the dialogue that these two fellows begin. The order of the governor-general's words, respond to the procedure at the armed forces if somebody wanted to talk with a superior. He should say: partner official... but, instead he says “partner time” because we used to talk with the elders soldiers in this way, whom almost had the two regulated years of service finished. This was a way of speaking jocosely among soldiers. The general is already without pants stressing the satire that I try to narrate with this event. In his belt instead of weapons are three eggs, symbol that the appearances deceive and until in clumsiest thing, it can be something of fineness. Extremely invested is the logical order to the point that the supreme authority requests permission to the tiny one. We used to joke in the free times, we imagined how it would be if we gave the orders, from our military same grades. The fact that the scene has the low darkness of the night helps to confer a bigger mysticism, also that the slender character seems to be the sentry and he requests a moment of rest to carry out his physiologic necessities. In the enviroment of the anuran are particles floating, giving him a microscopic dimension, what makes us think that the general captain neither can see it and, even he is asking for it to the anuran, in case he can see him doing something out of the rules. It characterizes the uncertainty that most of we felt when we needed or we not made the established.
The piece has a literary referent written by the National Cuban Hero José Martí: "Abdala" that is developed in Nubia. This was a small country of the African Continent, invaded by the Arabs; this historical and truthful material is the sustenance of the intention and the talkative purpose of the text. It also serves like base to formulate the allegory, with which mentions to the political national situation of that time (the fights recently initiate for the independence). From a point of view the analysis, the work assumes an apparent duality between its character realist and the allegorical one. However the countersign: "Written especially for the Homeland", it names directly to the receiver of the message as this painting mentions the situation, not only existent in current Cuba, but also to the relationship people-government of the world in general, where they are not always acceptable results.
